Hello, My name is Rebecca and I'm new here.A friend signed me up for the Reversing Diabetes FB page and I started the LCHF program about 6 weeks ago. I've read all the material I can find from Dr. Westman. I've only lost about 3 pounds, but have steadily been in moderate ketosis. I'm continuing onward, regardless. I'm on 3 medications that make losing weight very difficult, so I'm keeping that in mind.
My questions centers around recommended brands for glucose monitors. I saw a thread on the FB page that had a discussion about different ones, but I can't find it now! I'm pre-diabetic and my pain management physician wants me to start taking readings twice daily since I've had so many epidural steroid injections and this can impact blood sugars as well as oral medications that can impact my ability to lose weight. He will write an order once I decide which model I want. It will be covered by my insurance.
I know folks here aren't physicians, but I'd love to hear from other members about their experiences with monitors.
Thanks for creating this discussion board! Rebecca

Dr Richard Bernstein who wrote "The Diabetes Solution" and still treats patients today (in his 70's) suggests the Free Style Light. I did love that meter but the strips were costly. I now use the Bayer Contour Next USB meter and I love it. You can download software and plug in the meter to print out fancy charts and stuff! www.diabetesdaily.com/blog/2015/06/consumer-reports-glucose-meter-ratings-2015/Nothing on this forum is to be taken as medical advice. Thank you, Sandy. I appreciate your opinion and believe me, although I know we aren't physicians here (well, maybe we might have one undercover, lol) I really appreciate the actual experience of an individual.
I do need something that will have reasonably priced test strips, so I will check out the Bayer unit. I noticed several Bayer units made the tope 10 units for Consumer Reports this year.
Thanks again!
Rebecca

Just an update for anyone new to the diabetic realm or needing information about glucose monitors. I ordered the Bayer Contour Next GM and thought it was easy to use. However, I am experiencing very inconsistent readings. So, I decided to test it in one sitting by doing 3 BS readings in a row. On the first one, I got 109, the second one 117 and the third 125. I called the help line, which is supposed to be 24 hours, and they told me to call back at 8am. So, I will update my post should this resolve, but wanted to share this with anyone in the market for a testing unit.

Every blood sugar meter and the strips are allowed a 20% variation from reading to reading. All of the readings that you mentioned are withing the range allowed within the 20%. If you took 10 readings they will all be different. Also make sure that the strips are not past the expiration date. Nothing on this forum is to be taken as medical advice.
