The studies you will read below, some of which are not cited in the AACE guidelines, make a cogent case that post-meal blood sugars of 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) and higher and fasting blood sugars over 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/L) cause permanent organ damage and cause diabetes to progress. NOTE: All blood sugar levels discussed on these pages refer to plasma calibrated meter readings which are the readings used by all meters sold in the United States. In other parts of the world where blood calibrated are still in use, including the UK, users should divide the numbers given here by 1.12 to get the blood calibrated equivalents. www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045678.php

Thank you, Sandy! I had known about the 140 limit, but not the 100 for fasting. My fbg is too often over 100 - I'm going to be working on that.
I hadn't known that the ADA says 180 - but I should have. I'm taking a class for diabetic seniors. I've learned some things I didn't know, but the constant harping that diabetics need 45g carbs at each meal has bugged me - but I am the only one in the class not on medication. Yesterday the instructor said one could have bg up to 180. When I said I understood it to be 140, he said that's what is in the book.

Bonnie, when I went to my diabetes education class I was the only one there who was not already on medication. I remember them showing us a box of Frosted Flakes saying that in moderation these are fine to eat. Then raisin bran, 45-60 grams of carbs a meal and 30 for a snack or something like that. I told the dietician that I got diabetes eating less carbs that that! She just looked at me funny!
I walked out and didn't come back for any of the last 4 meetings. Nothing on this forum is to be taken as medical advice. It is personal opinion or experience.
